Specialties Tasty Bakery specializes in amazing artisan gluten-free baked goods with dairy-free, egg-free, sugar-free and vegan options. Organic, natural, high-end and local ingredients used. History Established in 2009 Shortly after being diagnosed in 2007 with Celiac Disease, an auto-immune disease in which one cannot eat gluten, i.e. barley, rye, wheat, spelt, and malt, I had the idea of starting a gluten-free bakery business. Knowing I was moving back to Michigan from Brooklyn, NY after 12 1/2 years, I knew Ann Arbor, MI would be the perfect place to start this venture. In May of 2009, Tasty Bakery finally arrived, with a mission to use natural and organic ingredients, high-quality chocolate, and compostable packaging. After having a tasting party and the thumbs up from other non-gluten eaters, I started selling my baked goods at the Ann Arbor Farmers’ Market. With many samples in hand, I challenged market-goers to taste my wonderful treats and they were pleasantly surprised at how amazing Tasty Bakery products tasted. Now many of my customers include gluten eaters along with gluten intolerant – just as I wanted it. Meet the Business Owner:
Julie R. I have been baking and collecting recipes since I was a kid. My mom and grandma always told me I should do something with baking, but I never wanted to take something I really liked to do and make it a business because I thought I would end up hating it. My employment began in nonprofit, then after moving to Brooklyn, NY I worked in the music industry in marketing, then graphic design there and in the cosmetics industry, and finally after realizing I had Celiac Disease and knowing we were moving to Ann Arbor, I thought I should try my hand in baking gluten free.
